As COVID retreats, dragon boat tradition back in south China
Saturday 6/4 at 11:22am

Dragon boat festivities have returned in parts of China for the first time since the outbreak of the pandemic in late 2019 as restrictions are lifted along with a major drop in COVID-19 cases. A historic area in the southern Chinese manufacturing hub of Guangzhou staged boat displays and other celebrations Friday to mark the holiday that commemorates the death more than 2,200 years ago of a revered poet and government minister. Along with displays of boats and traditional races that were not held this year, the holiday is marked by the consumption of steamed rice dumplings cooked with meat and peanuts and wrapped in green leaves. China recorded just 74 new COVID-19 cases on Friday and restrictions have been eased.

Abbott restarts baby formula plant linked to contamination
Abbott restarts baby formula plant linked to contamination
Saturday 6/4 at 11:11am

Abbott says it's restarted production at the Michigan factory that's tied to the ongoing baby formula shortage. The plant has been closed since February due to contamination, and that's led to nationwide supply problems for formulas needed to feed infants. The reopening isn't expected to have an immediate affect on availability. Abbott says it'll prioritize production of its specialty formulas for infants with severe food allergies and digestive problems. Once production resumes it'll still take several weeks before those products arrive in stores and pharmacies. The plant's reopening is one of several actions expected to improve supplies, including federal deliveries of imported formula from overseas.

Police patrol Hong Kong park to enforce Tiananmen vigil ban
Police patrol Hong Kong park to enforce Tiananmen vigil ban
Saturday 6/4 at 7:21am

Heavy police force has patrolled Hong Kong's Victoria Park after authorities for a third consecutive year banned public commemoration of the anniversary of the deadly Tiananmen Square crackdown in 1989. Vigils overseas are the only place marking the event. For decades, Hong Kong and nearby Macao were the only places in China allowed to commemorate the violent suppression by army troops of student protesters demanding greater democracy in Beijing on June 4, 1989. Hundreds, if not thousands, were killed. The ban is seen as part of a move to snuff out political dissent and a sign that Hong Kong is losing its freedoms under Beijing. Vigils were held in Taiwan, Australia and elsewhere to remember the Tiananmen victims.

As Clary Salandy pushes open the kitchen door at a nondescript community center in west London, her visitors pause, astonished by what they find. A dozen giraffe heads, in shades of orange and brown with top hats and flowing eyelashes, smile in a tidy row, while a herd of zebras peer out from near the refrigerator. That sense of surprise is what Salandy hopes people experience on Sunday, when the giraffes and zebras join a troupe of dancing elephants and flamingos outside Buckingham Palace as part of the pageant that will cap four days of festivities celebrating Queen Elizabeth II's 70 years on the throne. Until then, the plastic foam beasts will remain locked in the kitchen.
