Will Smith and Oscars Wild(e)

On Mondays, I usually slap away the blues so when I woke up to find the word 'slap' trending, my first reaction was finding solace in the fact that I am not alone in battling WFO (Work From Office) woes. But I couldn't be far from wrong because this slap went down as a rather rude moment in the history of televised broadcasts of The Oscars ceremony. Will Smith seemed to have taken Irish playwright Oscar Wilde's quote "True friends stab you in the front" too literally and slapped the host, Chris Rock for a joke that didn't land. Even by the most common standards of freedom of expression, Smith's physical reply to Rock's tasteless joke on the former's wife's (Jada Pinkett Smith) medical condition was not justified. Smith could have chosen a verbal dressing down because hitting people is not the solution. This also pointed to a very problematic issue where men take it upon themselves to 'defend' their woman. I mean, was Smith under the impression that Jada needed his help in shutting Rock down? Jada is in a position to stand up for herself and exercise her agency over herself, but no, a man has to swoop in and 'save her honour'. Opinions quickly formed, as did memes. And in the middle of this, someone decided to encash on the moment and make it into a toy where two male figurines replicate the slap and the phrase "Kung Fu Slap" is pasted on the package.

Back home, more action awaits as IPL came back to home turf with two new teams. It is refreshing to now see people focussing on the matches instead of who is in the stands. And if you are in the mood to venture out and explore your city, we have a hand-picked curation of weekend stand-up comedy gigs and restaurants with a view.

At The Movies

Bhumi Pednekar: Not scared of being stereotyped as a small-town girl in films

"Even if I'm playing a girl who's from the same milieu in different films, I make sure that the ways they lead their lives are very different, and that requires a lot of unlearning about heartland India," says actor Bhumi Pednekar who debuted with Dum Laga Ke Haisha (2015) in the role of a teacher based in a small town in Haridwar. She followed it up with films like Toilet: Ek Prem Katha, Shubh Mangal Saavdhan (both 2017) and the recently released Badhaai Do, where she was seen playing a strong-spirited small-town girl.
