Bollywood expressed triumph at the sentence of death by hanging awarded to Nirbhaya’s rapists
A Delhi court has pronounced the death sentence for all four convicts in the Delhi gangrape case. The four accused were convicted for the gangrape and murder of a 23-year-old paramedic student on December 16, 2012, in New Delhi. The student was assaulted in a bus in which she was travelling with her male companion. There were six others in the bus, including the driver, all of whom violated the young woman and battered her friend. The victims were stripped and thrown out of the vehicle. The woman died from her injuries 13 days later while undergoing emergency treatment in Singapore.
The accused were caught and held – one of them committed suicide in jail, while another, a juvenile, was awarded maximum permissible punishment of three years in imprisonment. The court, while pronouncing the judgement this afternoon said that, “We cannot turn a blind eye on the rising cases of sexual assault against women,” and that the incident shook the “collective conscience of society”. The crime belonged to the ‘rarest of rare’ category and deserved special scrutiny.
