Tommy Trenchard for NPR
It's a (relatively new) tradition for our blog. As a new year dawns, we ask leaders in global health and development to share a wish for the year ahead. And then we ask our readers to send us their wish -- if money were no object.
The wishes for 2024 include a paid parental leave policy for the U.S. -- one of only seven countries in the world without such a program; more respect for rural voices and a commitment to improve the health and well-being of the world's teenagers.
And now dear readers, we'd love to hear your wishes as well. Send your wish to goatsandsoda@npr.org with "Wishes 2024" in the subject line by Friday, January 12. We may use your wish in an upcoming story.
Last year we were thrilled to get illustrated wishes as well from students in the Friends School in Atlanta -- with thoughts like "for people to have peaceful days everyday in their souls." And we marveled at your most excellent wishes: Send leaders into space (no, not to get rid of them but to give them a new perspective on our pale blue dot), free electricity, treat everyone with dignity!
Percussionist, composer and bandleader Sunny Jain's Tiny Desk concert is a global extravaganza: "There are references to his parents' journey to the U.S. [from India], Sufi dance music and the mash-up of Bollywood and the Italian westerns of the 1960s."
