HC judge de-rostered, set to get repatriated

The Supreme Court collegium on Monday issued a resolution repatriating Delhi high court judge justice Yashwant Varma to the Allahabad high court in connection with a controversy from the discovery of a large amount of cash at the judge’s official residence in the national capital earlier this month.

The decision came hours after Delhi high court chief justice DK Upadhyay withdrew justice Varma from judicial duties with immediate effect, and reassigned the cases handled by him to a different bench.

“The Supreme Court Collegium in its meetings held on 20th and 24th March 2025 has recommended repatriation of Mr. justice Yashwant Varma, judge, high court of Delhi, to the high court of judicature at Allahabad,” stated the resolution by the collegium. Read more.

A standoff between the government and the Opposition over senior Congress leader and Karnataka deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar’s purported remarks on providing reservation to Muslims and changing the Constitution rocked Parliament on Monday, triggering multiple adjournments in both Houses.

While the BJP attacked the Congress alleging it wanted to change the Constitution provided by BR Ambedkar to give religion-based reservation to appease the minority community, the principal opposition party accused the ruling party of raising a “fake issue” and indulging in disinformation to stall Parliament.

Shivakumar, who is also the Karnataka Congress president, refuted the remarks attributed to him, accusing the BJP of resorting to “brazen and blatant lies to malign the Congress party and me.” Read more.

Both Centre, state must act to protect wetlands

Given wetlands include village ponds, major lakes and everything in between, all of India’s 231,195 wetlands may not need protection. But just 102 of them being notified so far — the status creates a legal obligation to conserve these — underlines the scant attention paid to wetland preservation. Wetlands are not just cornerstones of avian conservation but also render several ecosystem services depending on their location. High altitude wetlands play the role of conduits for glacial melt that feed rivers. Mangroves in coastal areas function as both important habitats and ingress buffers. Inland ones can be important drought and flood buffers. They also support the livelihoods of 6% of the country’s population and act as carbon sinks. Read more.
