I am writing this newsletter from New Delhi, epicenter of the rise of the Global South and capital of India -- this year's host country of the G-20 summit. I am here to cover the plenary meeting of the Trilateral Commission. During the three-day gathering, leaders from Asia, Europe and the Americas meet to discuss global issues touching on everything from the war in Ukraine, the food crisis and the Indo-Pacific to supply chain issues and Africa. But of course, the opening session is dedicated to India. Last November, we published a Big Story on this exclusive meeting titled "Inside the Trilateral Commission: Power elites grapple with China's rise." If you haven't read it, I encourage you to do so. India is also the focus of our recent Big Story commemorating International Women's Day. We examine the evolving gender landscape in Bollywood, sharing insights from superstar Deepika Padukone, among other women who are helping reshape India's movie industry. The story paints a picture of steady change in a world long dominated by men. I hope you have had a chance to read our past issues celebrating International Women's Day. These are important stories for us, because diversity and inclusion are among the core values at Nikkei Asia. Last year, for example, our reporters focused on Asia's femtech revolution. As I wrote in my last newsletter, I dream of a world of equality, in which there is no need for a dedicated day such as this. Market Spotlight is an analysis piece by Francesca Regalado on Delta Electronics Thailand, the country's biggest company in terms of market capitalization. The author's view is summed up in the headline, "EV boom creates unlikely stock market star in Thailand." Business Spotlight is a fascinating look at Indonesian startups by Nana Shibata and Ismi Damayanti. Considering the country's vast archipelagic geography, I believe that telemedicine has huge potential to offer better medical treatment for the people. Asia Insight looks at recent developments surrounding Sri Lanka's political and economic crisis. The photos in the story say it all: the chaos continues. We will follow the situation closely, with the hope that International Monetary Fund aid and resurging tourism will help. From the Life and Arts section, I recommend "The top 10 Japanese hotels for architectural excellence." Excellent architecture does not necessarily have to be practical. Looking at the list, I found that older hotels have good reputations for providing comfortable and pleasant stays for guests. |
